Antero Tavares, a candidate for the Presidency, emphasized the need for increased attention to the safeguarding of the historical and cultural heritage of Cidade Velha during a campaign event in Ribeira Grande de Santiago. He argued that tourism growth must be aligned with the protection of these values and highlighted the continuous process of preserving historical memory. Tavares stated that while the President of the Republic does not have governing functions, they should be vigilant about national heritage preservation and alert to the risks of excessive use of spaces for tourism. He also mentioned the importance of promoting Cabo Verdean heritage internationally and promised to uphold the Constitution regarding culture and heritage if elected.
