Gilson Alves, a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, proposed a referendum for Cape Verdeans to decide on granting automatic Cape Verdean nationality to Guinean citizens, with reciprocity for Cape Verdeans living in Guinea-Bissau. This proposal was made during a meeting with the Guinean community in Fonton, Praia, where he highlighted the need to address documentation and integration issues faced by this community. Alves justified the initiative by referencing the historical ties between the two peoples, particularly their joint struggle for independence. He noted that Guineans played a significant role in Cape Verde's liberation. Alves also mentioned that he had discussed the proposal with some Cape Verdeans and found no opposition. He intends to address the situation of other foreign communities in stages, starting with the Guinean community due to their historical connection.
